Our History

The story of the Iditarod began as a lifeline across the Alaskan wilderness. In the early 1900s, the Iditarod Trail connected remote gold mining camps and villages. In 1973, the first modern Iditarod Sled Dog Race was held to honor the legacy of those early trailblazers.

Since then, the race has grown into a symbol of endurance, teamwork, and respect for Alaska’s environment — values that continue to guide the Foundation’s work today.

Over the decades, the Iditarod has evolved from a regional competition into a world-renowned event that draws mushers, volunteers, and fans from across the globe.
